JoE’s readership is as wide and diverse as ethnobiology itself, with readers spanning from both the natural and social sciences. Not surprisingly, a glance at the papers published in the Journal reveals the depth and breadth of topics, extending from studies in archaeology and the origins of agriculture, to folk classification systems, to food composition, plants, birds, mammals, fungi and everything in between.
Research areas published in JoE include but are not limited to neo- and paleo-ethnobiology, zooarchaeology, ethnobotany, ethnozoology, ethnopharmacology, ethnoecology, linguistic ethnobiology, human paleoecology, and many other related fields of study within anthropology and biology, such as taxonomy, conservation biology, ethnography, political ecology, and cognitive and cultural anthropology.
JoE does not limit itself to a single perspective, approach or discipline, but seeks to represent the full spectrum and wide diversity of the field of ethnobiology, including cognitive, symbolic, linguistic, ecological, and economic aspects of human interactions with our living world. Articles that significantly advance ethnobiological theory and/or methodology are particularly welcome, as well as studies bridging across disciplines and knowledge systems. JoE does not publish uncontextualized data such as species lists; appropriate submissions must elaborate on the ethnobiological context of findings.
The Journal of Ethology features reviews and original papers relating to all aspects of animal behavior, including traditional ethology. Papers on field, laboratory, or theoretical studies are welcomed. In contrast to many other ethological journals that prefer studies testing explicit hypotheses, the Journal of Ethology is interested both in observational studies and in experimental studies. However, the authors of observational studies are always requested to provide background information about behaviors in their study and an appropriate context to establish the scientific importance of their observation, which in turn produces fascinating hypotheses to explain the behaviors.

Diatom Research is the journal of the International Society for Diatom Research. The journal is published quarterly, in March, June, September and December, and welcomes manuscripts on any aspect of diatom biology.
In addition to full-length papers, short notes and reviews of recent literature are published which need not contain all the sections required for full-length papers; we see these as being necessary to record information which is of interest but which cannot be followed up in detail. Discursive “Opinion” papers are encouraged which would not necessarily follow the normal lay-out. If extremely long papers are to be offered, the author(s) should contact the editors first to discuss any problems. Book reviews, obituaries and meeting reports can be published. All papers will be subject to critical review by the editors and referees, as appropriate to their content. Papers will be accepted in English only.
The journal Folia Geobotanica publishes articles in vegetation science, plant ecology and plant systematics, including the topics of temporal community patterns, population and ecosystem ecology, and invasion and conservation ecology. Within the field of plant systematics, Folia Geobotanica welcomes papers on systematic and evolutionary botany, including phylogenetic reconstructions, phylogeographic and biogeographic inferences, studies of microevolutionary processes, taxonomic studies, and broader taxonomic revisions.

The subject of the origin and early evolution of life is an inseparable part of the general discipline of Astrobiology. The journal Origins of Life and Evolution of Biospheres places special importance on the interconnection as well as the interdisciplinary nature of these fields, as is reflected in its subject coverage. While any scientific study which contributes to our understanding of the origins, evolution and distribution of life in the Universe is suitable for inclusion in the journal, some examples of important areas of interest are: prebiotic chemistry and the nature of Earth's early environment, self-replicating and self-organizing systems, the theory of the RNA world and of other possible precursor systems, and the problem of the origin of the genetic code. Early evolution of life - as revealed by such techniques as the elucidation of biochemical pathways, molecular phylogeny, the study of Precambrian sediments and fossils and of major innovations in microbial evolution - forms a second focus. As a larger and more general context for these areas, Astrobiology refers to the origin and evolution of life in a cosmic setting, and includes interstellar chemistry, planetary atmospheres and habitable zones, the organic chemistry of comets, meteorites, asteroids and other small bodies, biological adaptation to extreme environments, life detection and related areas. Experimental papers, theoretical articles and authorative literature reviews are all appropriate forms for submission to the journal. In the coming years, Astrobiology will play an even greater role in defining the journal's coverage and keeping Origins of Life and Evolution of Biospheres well-placed in this growing interdisciplinary field.

An interdisciplinary journal, Theoretical Population Biology presents articles on theoretical aspects of the biology of populations, particularly in the areas of demography, ecology, epidemiology, evolution, and genetics. Emphasis is on the development of mathematical theory and models that enhance the understanding of biological phenomena.
Articles highlight the motivation and significance of the work for advancing progress in biology, relying on a substantial mathematical effort to obtain biological insight. The journal also presents empirical results and computational and statistical methods directly impinging on theoretical problems in population biology.
